When we were told about the ceremony that would take place in Vietnam – called the Giving & Receiving Ceremony – we were told that birth parents (and family) would be invited to attend this ceremony. While this might sound like a scary thing for adoptive parents, we were told that it’s a very beautiful time. I didn’t go into it feeling nervous, but I wasn’t really sure what to expect.
Our daughter Gracie was born in the hospital and has a real Vietnamese birth certificate with her birth mother’s name on it. We have a letter that she had written, stating why she couldn’t keep the baby. When we were in Vietnam, I learned a bit more about their culture – if a young woman has a child outside of marriage, the chances of ever getting married are very slim. So, I’m so glad that Gracie’s birth mother chose life for her! She did not come to the Giving & Receiving Ceremony, but in my heart, I’m thankful for her each and every day! I believe that, if she could see Gracie now, she would be very proud and know that she made the right decision.
