With any new live-in relationship – be it a roommate, spouse, or new child in the family – there are always adjustments. You need to get used to the way this new person does things, their likes and dislikes, their habits, etc. Because Gracie was so young when we brought her home (4 1/2 months), I expected to be able to parent her the same way that I had with Ashley. I quickly learned that was not the case. These girls were (and are) very different!
Ashley was a snuggly little baby, wanting to be held a lot and rocked to sleep at night. Not so with Gracie. She wanted to be put into her crib, lights out, door closed – she wanted to be left alone. That was a little hard for me at first because I wanted to snuggle and love on her and make up for those first few months of her life that we missed. And that was only the first in many personality differences that we’d need to learn to adjust to over the years.
